The World Series of Poker tournament was started in 1970. Benny Binion invited seven of the best players to compete. The venue was in  Las Vegas, at the Horseshoe establishment.

The seven would face off and then choose a winner by secret ballot. They played several poker variants in search of the best of the lot. The single tournament was timed from start to finish.

The WSOP faced a rough start as it stepped to make its mark. It was until 1973 that the poker tournament was televised by CBS Sports. This televised session piqued the interest of poker lovers outside Las Vegas.

The events also expanded to include Razz, Seven-card Stud, No Limit Hold’em, and Deuce-to-seven Draw. Puggy Pearson won the fiercely contested title of 1973 poker champion.

Benny Binion grew poker to standards in the early days. Until he died in 1989, Horseshoe Casino was a poker leader. The casino bought adjacent casinos and had a full-time poker room.

The WSOP had also started a women’s poker championship to match the growth. And with televised tournaments, everyone knew what WSOP was. The World Series of Poker became a household name.
